Mackay Regional Council is seeking experienced Financial Accountants to join our Financial Accounting team as Senior Accountants. These are excellent opportunities for professionals with 3+ years of relevant experience who are looking to apply their technical accounting expertise in a complex and diverse local government environment. In this role, you will help deliver high-quality financial reporting, compliance, audit support and specialist financial advice that underpins sound decision-making and strong financial governance across Council.

 

About the role:

As a Senior Accountant within the Financial Accounting team, you will provide specialist financial accounting and advisory support across a broad range of responsibilities including statutory and annual financial reporting, audit support, compliance, internal controls, reconciliations and businessimprovement initiatives.

You will analyse financial data and provide specialist financial advice, assist in the preparation of annual financial statements, support internal and external audit processes, and undertake investigations or reviews as requested by management. You will also contribute to maintaining strong financial governance, improving systems and processes, and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, accounting standards and Council policies.

Working closely with internal stakeholders across Council, you will deliver accurate insights, practical advice and trusted financial support that strengthens decision-making, enhances accountability and supports effective service delivery to the community.

 

What you will bring:

To succeed in this role, you will bring:

  • Tertiary qualifications in business, finance, commerce or accounting, or an equivalent qualification.
  • At least 3 years of relevant accounting experience, ideally in financial accounting, statutory reporting, audit support or a similarly regulated environment such as local government.
  • Strong technical accounting capability, with the ability to analyse financial data, provide sound specialist advice, and approach work in a detail-oriented, analytical, team-focused and collaborative way.
  • Well-developed communication, organisational and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, contribute to continuous improvement and work confidently across a large and complex organisation.
  • Eligibility for membership with CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand will be highly regarded, along with knowledge of local government legislation, accounting standards, financial reporting requirements and audit processes.

  • Base annual salary of $ 107,933.28 or $57.25 per hour (part-time)
  • Up to 18% superannuation (conditions apply).
  • Choice of 4 or 5 weeks’ annual leave with 17.5% leave loading. (Pro-rata for part-time)
