Everyone at our Department recognises the importance of a healthy environment. Whatever your job with us, you’ll strive and innovate to achieve a better Queensland. Our role is complex and our work can be challenging - important work usually is. But your contribution will count, and so will you.

We are seeking an enthusiastic emerging leader to join our team of dedicated Compliance Officers as a Team Leader based in our Townsville CBD office. If you’re ready to be part of something exciting and meaningful, we’d love to hear from you!

The Northern Compliance team delivers environmental compliance services from offices in Cairns and Townsville across the area extending from the Burdekin Shire in the south, west to Boulia and the Northern Territory border, and north to Cape York and the Torres Strait Islands. North Queensland includes a range of industry and commerce, including the North West Mineral province where most of Queensland's large metal mining operations are located.

As a Team Leader you will be required to manage a small team of staff that are responsible for assessing compliance with the Environmental Protection Act 1994; Coastal Protection and Management Act 1995; Waste Reduction and Recycling Act 2011 and the Queensland Heritage Act 1992. Compliance assessments are conducted through a combination of proactive site inspections, participation in stakeholder meetings and/or reactive investigations across regional and remote locations in North Queensland. As a Team Leader, you will be an integral support for compliance officers through the provision of technical advice and guidance on proposed compliance strategies. Team Leaders are also members of the local compliance leadership team, which provides an opportunity to review outputs, processes and procedures with a focus on identifying areas of continuous improvement for both employees and our stakeholders.

This is an excellent opportunity to build upon your existing leadership and project management skills while expanding your technical knowledge in the application of principles and practices of environmental management. Please note that overnight travel may be required and includes travel to active mine sites, industrial locations and other departmental offices across the State. You may also be required to participate in an on-call (after hours) incident response roster.

It is essential that you possess a university degree (undergraduate and/or postgraduate) from a recognised tertiary institution in environmental management; chemical, forensic, physical, geological, hydrological, environmental, applied and biological sciences, environmental engineering. Other closely related disciplines may be considered. If your qualification is issued by an Overseas Institution, you are responsible in obtaining official recognition - refer to the information in the position description under the section eligibility requirements and how to apply for the role. You are also required to hold an unrestricted driver's license recognised in the State of Queensland.

Your application will remain current for up to 12 months and you may be contacted regarding other identical or similar vacancies at various locations and for either fulltime or part-time employment.
