About the role

We are seeking a People and Culture Manager to join our team on a full-time basis at our Townsville QLD location. This is a strategic leadership position responsible for driving human resources initiatives, building a positive workplace culture, and ensuring our team operates effectively and cohesively. Reporting to senior management, you will be instrumental in shaping the employee experience, supporting team development, and aligning our people practices with organisational objectives. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on our workplace environment and contribute to the success of Mercure Townsville.

Key responsibilities

  1. Developing and implementing people and culture strategies that align with organisational goals and enhance employee engagement

  2. Managing recruitment, selection, and onboarding processes to ensure we attract and retain top talent

  3. Overseeing employee relations, handling workplace issues, and providing support to both staff and management

  4. Administering payroll, leave management, and compliance with relevant employment legislation and awards

  5. Designing and delivering training and development programmes to support staff growth and career progression

  6. Creating and maintaining a positive workplace culture through engagement initiatives, recognition programmes, and team-building activities

  7. Ensuring compliance with workplace health and safety requirements and supporting a safe work environment

  8. Conducting performance management reviews and providing coaching to managers on employee development

  9. Managing HR policies and procedures, ensuring consistency and fairness across the organisation

  10. Preparing HR reports and analytics to inform strategic decision-making


What we're looking for

  1. Tertiary qualification in Human Resources, Business Management, or a related discipline

  2. 3-5 years of professional human resources experience, with demonstrated responsibility for people management and culture development

  3. Strong knowledge of Australian employment law, workplace relations, and relevant hospitality industry awards and agreements

  4. Proven experience in recruitment, selection, onboarding, and talent development within a hospitality or customer-facing environment

  5. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships across all levels of the organisation

  6. Demonstrated ability to manage employee relations, conflict resolution, and disciplinary matters professionally and impartially

  7. Experience with HR systems and payroll administration software

  8. Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines

  9. Strategic thinking and problem-solving capabilities aligned with business objectives

  10. Proficiency in data analysis and HR reporting to inform decision-making

  11. Commitment to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and supportive workplace culture

  12. Preference: Experience in the hospitality, hotel, or tourism industry
